The time has come. It’s time to have “the talk” with your fleet. The talk about SAFETY.

Safety is a priority for every company, especially those of us at Dickinson Fleet. But that doesn’t mean that we all couldn’t benefit from a little reminder. And NOW is the time for that reminder.

Operation Safe DriverThe Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has set October 15-21 as the dates for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week. This annual event is a partnership between CVSA and the Federal Motor Carriers Association. This is a time when Law enforcement pays particularly close attention to all motorists showing unsafe driving behaviors. While they’re looking at both passenger and commercial vehicles, offend times it’s the commercial vehicles that get the majority on the violations.

Some common violations include unsafe driving behaviors such as: speeding, distracted driving, texting while driving, not using a seatbelt, following too closely, improper lane change and failure to obey traffic signals. These are “basic” safety concerns. These are things you know you’ve covered with your fleet multiple times. But NOW is the time to hammer it home and remind them of Operation Safe Driver Week.

Last year, law enforcement officers issued approximately 21,000 warnings and citations. Nearly 12,000 of those citations were given to drivers of commercial vehicles. That’s 57% that were CMV drivers. Not only does it mean that driver got hit with the violation, but also the company.

This is the opportunity to review the basics, but also reinforce the specific policies for your fleet. Really, it’s the perfect time to get all drivers back on the same page by reminding them that you care about their safety, as well as those motorists around them.
