There’s a reason we fall back on “the way it’s always been done.” It’s familiar and it’s worked before. It can also keep an industry tied to practices that no longer match the world around it.

That is the challenge facing automotive logistics today.

Consider how much has changed. Vehicles are bought and sold across state lines, often sight unseen and picked up from locations the owner may never visit. That means the person who owns the risk can be hundreds of miles from the person releasing the vehicle.

Bad actors have learned how to exploit that distance. One of the clearest examples is the vehicle handoff.

For decades, release processes often relied on paperwork or phone calls. Some digital tools have emerged, but many were built for a single company’s own operations—leaving carriers and pickup locations, who work across dozens of shippers and platforms, to juggle a patchwork of disconnected systems. What the industry has often lacked is a solution designed to support the needs of everyone.

That is the driving force behind Secure Vehicle Transfer, Cox Automotive’s digital vehicle-release solution. Offered first through Central Dispatch, it is designed to verify that the driver taking possession of a vehicle is authorized to transport that specific vehicle before the handoff occurs.

It’s the next step in Central Dispatch’s years of investments to support a more secure marketplace, building on other efforts like identity verification and real-time vehicle tracking. And unlike single-company tools, Secure Vehicle Transfer is built with the scale and vision of the industry’s largest marketplace, with plans to reach well beyond it.

Yet here is what we have learned: building the technology may not be the hardest part.

We can develop tools to validate driver authorization, issue revocable digital credentials and create a traceable chain-of-custody record. The greater challenge is changing behavior and helping an industry recognize that processes that served it well for decades may no longer be enough for today’s environment.

This only works if everyone is willing to make that shift together—and each participant has a clear role to play.

Shippers set the expectation.

Shippers initiate the transportation assignment and identify the carrier authorized to move the vehicle. They can help raise the standard by making verified release part of the expected process, communicating that expectation to partners and supporting pickup locations as they adopt it.

Carriers and drivers make verification part of the job.

Carriers are working hard to serve their customers, protect their businesses and keep vehicles moving. A documented handoff provides another way to demonstrate that the proper process was followed and that the vehicle transported was the vehicle assigned.

For drivers, the behavior change is straightforward: arrive at the authorized pickup location, present the appropriate credential and complete the verification process before accepting the vehicle.

To help ensure verification happens at the right place, the process can only be completed when a driver is within a five-mile radius of the authorized pickup location. That provides greater confidence that the right driver is taking possession of the right vehicle before the handoff occurs.

This should not feel like a separate administrative task. Verification works best when it is integrated into tools and workflows carriers already use every day.

Pickup locations make “show me” the standard.

The final release decision happens at the pickup location. That makes the person handing over the keys one of the most important participants in the process.

Before releasing a vehicle, the location should be able to answer a simple question with confidence: Is this person authorized to take this specific vehicle right now?

If the answer cannot be verified, the vehicle should not leave.

This behavior is especially important at locations where vehicle release processes may vary. The goal is to give employees a clear, repeatable way to confirm authorization before the vehicle leaves their control.

Technology providers make the action easy.

Central Dispatch plays a critical role in this shift.

Asking the industry to adopt stronger practices only works if we deliver best-in-class technology to support it and put in the work to drive real behavior change.

That’s why we listened to our users, reduced unnecessary friction and are now equipping every participant—through education, awareness and the relationships we hold across the ecosystem—with a clear understanding of what they need to do to shore up this critical step in the vehicle transport process.

No single participant controls the entire vehicle journey. Each controls a critical moment within it—and Central Dispatch is what connects those moments, helping create greater visibility and documentation across key handoff points from pickup to delivery.

It is time to make verification the default.

Change can feel uncomfortable at first. Then it becomes expected. Eventually, it becomes hard to imagine operating any other way.

Secure Vehicle Transfer has the potential to follow that same path, and Central Dispatch intends to lead it there.

That’s why we built the industry’s first revocable digital credentialing solution, designed to scale trust today and help set the standard for secure vehicle movement tomorrow. To learn more about Secure Vehicle Transfer, read the full announcement here.
