2019 will bring sweet deals on America’s favorite vehicles, SUVs

Shoppers could be in luck next year as a flood of new and lightly used SUVs creates bargains on America’s most popular vehicles.

2019 could be a year of great deals on SUVs as incentives on new models rise and off-lease, late-model used SUVs hit the market in unprecedented numbers. Smaller SUVs like the Ford Escape, Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox should be in particularly high supply.

IHS projects U.S. SUV sales will continue to grow from 7.4 million in 2015 to 10 million in 2025. That growth — and the fact that sales of traditional cars are falling in sync with SUVs’ ascendance — explains why nearly every automaker is shifting its investment and development focus from cars. …

IHS predicts the number of SUV models sold in the U.S. will rise from 116 in 2017 to 190 in 2025. …

The ratio will reverse in 2019, according to Zo Rahim, Cox Automotive research manager.
