Both service activity and service revenue decreased at U.S. franchised dealerships in June, according to the latest Cox Automotive analysis of Xtime metrics. The Repair Order Revenue Index decreased month over month in June after 11 months of increases and remains up year over year. Meanwhile, the Repair Order Volume Index decreased both month over month and year over year.

The monthly Xtime volume and revenue metrics are designed to showcase average service department performance over time, with the information indexed to January 2019. The two, top-line measures provide a glimpse into service department performance at franchised dealerships in the U.S. Xtime, a Cox Automotive brand, provides software that helps auto dealers facilitate more than 10 million service appointments monthly.

The June Repair Order Volume Index was down 4.4% month over month from May, at 82.8 and was down 14.0% from June 2021.

Note: Historical data are seeing revisions, but the previously reported pattern remains intact.

“It’s notable that May and June historically seem to have a pullback in service appointments, and we saw a similar trend last year,” said Cox Automotive Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke. “This June measure included an additional 3-day weekend, which is uncommon in our June measurements, so that too may have contributed to year-over-year weakness, as long weekends often reduce service work. I would not expect to see more declines in July. If anything, I would think consumers will take care of their vehicles and hold on to them longer in this expensive and uncertain environment.”

Cox Automotive Industry Insights, with help from the Xtime data team, report the Repair Order Volume Index and Repair Order Revenue Index around the 20th of each month. For more information, reach out to the Cox Automotive Public Relations team.
